World of Work Week

Our school recently held it's annual 'World of Work' week. Primary 1 got the chance to learn about the world of work from many community visitors. We got the chance to learn even more about what employability skills we will need in the future. We had visits from an emergency nurse, a bio-medical scientist, a policeman, a high school PE teacher, a chaplain, a plater from the shipyards, a dog trainer and our local MSP. What an interesting week we had listening to and questioning our visitors!!

Bananas!!

Dr What left Primary 1 a video message asking us to find out more about what ships are used for and why. We found out about the different types of ships that sail around Britain and the jobs that they do for our country. Room 1 looked at the complex journey of a banana - how it gets from where it is grown abroad to our supermarket shelves. We learned about Fairtrade farming, and we were able to link this to our learning about Rights and Responsibilities. Dr What also left a special delivery for our class - bread, Fairtrade bananas, butter and knifes. We decided to make healthy banana sandwiches! Making our sandwiches helped us practice our spreading, chopping and cutting skills. We used our experience to try our hand at procedural writing - instructions for 'How to Make a Healthy Sandwich'.
