Buddy Visit

We invited our buddies to hear all about our book study work. Using the books to help, we retold the story of 'What the Ladybird Heard'. We showed them the masks we had made, and talked to them about the writing we had been doing.
We loved having our buddies come to visit!

Primary 1a are busy working on a Literacy Topic based around our BookBug gift 'What the Ladybird Heard'. It is a fantastic book!

We have been using the book in class and at home. With our friends in rooms 2 and 3, we have made animal masks and maps. At writing time we have been learning about alliteration! Room 1 has used the words from the book to do lots of writing as well!

Next week, our primary 7 buddies are coming to visit to see all our hard work. Look at the lovely invites we have made!

Our First Golden Time!

After a relaxing Christmas break; room 1 has started term 3 in our new building with enthusiasm! We absolutely love our new school! It is exciting using all the new learning spaces and resources.

Our new classroom is just lovely - it is very big and bright! We also have a fantastic breakout space outside our class that we share with rooms 2, 3 and 4. It is great!!

Look at the pictures below of our first golden-time in our new school - we had lots of fun! We can now share golden-time with our friends in the other classes! The breakout space means that Miss McCabe, Mrs Ayres and Miss Williams can put out even more activities for us to choose from!

Christmas Party

Primary 1 had a great time at their Christmas party. We played musical statues and pass the parcel! Fantastic fun!
A very special visitor came to see us! Santa had a present for every boy and girl!

Nativity

Primary 1 and 2 in our school have been working very hard this term on their annual Nativity performance. We have learned all about the Christmas story!

All the boys and girls in room 1 have been learning songs and dances. Some of us have lines to say too. Miss McCabe is very proud of us! It was tricky at first to remember where to go on the stage and to work with so many other children, but Miss McCabe says we have been superstars!

Football Coaching with St Mirren

Primary 1 were very lucky recently to have a visit from St Mirren Football Club! Football coaches from the local club came to our school for a coaching session. We got the chance to practise our dribbling, passing and stopping skills.

RME Welcoming a Baby

Primary 1 went on a special trip to Trinity Church recently. Our R.M.E. topic this term is Welcoming a Baby. Mr Steele told us all about what a baby needs and how a baby is baptised. Our class got the chance to ask questions about how a baby is welcomed into the church community.

We also got the chance to explore the church. Mr Steele was kind enough to tell us all about the pulpit, the communion table, the baptismal font and the lectern. You can see from our pictures we had a fantastic time!

RME Welcoming a Baby

As part of our welcoming a baby topic, we invited Mrs Coyle and her lovely newborn son to visit us. Miss McCabe helped us to think of some really interesting questions to ask Mrs Coyle.
Mrs Coyle showed us some of the things that her new baby needs. We were all really excited to see him and we think he liked coming to visit us because he didn't cry at all! He is just beautiful!

Hallowe'en Fun!

We have been having lots of fun celebrating Hallowe'en!

Most of our boys and girls went along to the school Hallowe'en disco - look at our fantastic costumes! We also took part in a dress up day to raise funds for our Parent Run Library.

On Hallowe'en day itself, Miss McCabe let us 'dook' for apples - we got into a soaking mess!! Miss McCabe looked funny in her scary bat boppers too!!

Art

We learned how to 'colour mix' this term. Miss McCabe told us all about the three primary colours (blue, red and yellow) and she explained how we can use them to make other colours.
We had great fun painting our fingers and using our hands to create new colours! Our new display looks fantastic!

Excellent Behaviour!

Look at how many people in our class have had excellent behaviour this term! Mrs Wieland gave everyone in our class a certificate if they had no red traffic lights this term and less than 5 green and amber traffic lights.

Outdoor Learning

Our science topic this term is electricity. We have been learning all about electricity safety, mains electricity and battery electricity. In our learning plan we told Miss McCabe that we also wanted to learn about the uses of electricity.

As part of our topic, we were set a challenge. With a partner, we had to go outside and find things that use electricity. We then had to work out if it was mains or battery powered and how it was connected.

We did really well - Miss McCabe was really impressed. Callum, Heather and Jackson took some pictures of the things we found.

This term, primary 1a are doing their best to write their numbers and letters correctly. Miss McCabe is very proud of us! We are trying hard to hold our pencil correctly, form our numbers and letters in the right way and use finger spaces.

Class Charter

This term, primary 1 has been learning about Rights and Responsibilities. Miss McCabe and Mrs Coyle have been helping us to find out about the rights of the child and the UN Conventions of the Right of the Child. We now know that to have our rights we also have responsibilities.

We have created a class charter in Room 1. Our new Class Charter helps us remember our rights and responsibilities. We used our Golden Rules and Qualities to help us. This will allow us to contribute to achieving Rights Respecting Schools award.

Homework

Primary 1a were given their homework bags for the first time this week! We were all so excited to be getting homework just like the big boys and girls!

Inside our homework bags we have:
*Homework diaries (these tell us what to do incase we forget!)

*Maths worksheets

Miss McCabe says we must try to remember our homework bags (with everything inside) everyday, because we sometimes use the materials in class. We will work with our ORT word cards, reading books, sounds and word boxes each week with Miss McCabe.

Primary 1 Buddies

Primary 1 has been helped to settle into school routines by their primary 7 buddies. We have enjoyed getting to know our buddies - the older children visited our class to read a story and they have also been playing games with us in the playground. When we went to the dinner hall for the first time our buddies gave some friendly reassurance and help when needed.

We are so grateful that they have taken time out of their busy days to help us.

Cooperative Team Challenge

Miss McCabe set each group in our class a Cooperative Work Challenge recently. We had to work in our groups to create a poster that would let any visitors to our class know what our group names are. It was quite difficult for us at first, but with a little help from Miss McCabe we were able to plan and create our posters. Some of our groups decided easily on our names, other groups had to vote! Room 1 now has 4 teams – The Red Fire Engines, The Blue Smarties, The Green Apples and The Yellow Suns!

Everyone had to listen and cooperate. We had a time keeper, a materials manager, an encourager and an air traffic controller at each group to make sure we were kept on task. Miss McCabe was impressed at our quiet voices and helping hands!

As well as designing the poster with each group name, Primary 1 also made promise hands. We succeeded in our challenge - Miss McCabe has put our posters up in class for everyone to see!

Active Learning in Room 1

As part of our Maths and Language programmes, we have lots of active learning activities. We enjoy lots of different things from using the computers and the Smart-board to using multilink and playing matching and bingo games

Room 1 is very lucky to have a learning tent and comfy library. We also have a water tray and sand tray outside.

Active learning is a great chance for us to work with different people in the class. Miss McCabe says we work very well at active learning times!

Settling into School Life

Primary 1a has settled well into school life. We are all working hard and enjoying being in room 1! In our first week, we decided that we should have a set of rules for our class. This is to make sure it is a happy and safe place to learn each day. We want to be able to work and play happily together.

As well as thinking about how we work inside the class, room 1 also thought about how we would behave outside the classroom. With Miss McCabe's help we chose our own 'quality indicators' to remind ourselves what our work-times, listening times and lines should be like. Everyone who visits our class comments on how good we are at listening, working quietly and playing together co-operatively!

We have also been talking about the rights and responsibilities we have as children. Although this has been quite hard for us to think about, Miss McCabe says we are doing very well – our class has been able to think about ideas for our own class charter to go alongside our ‘qualities’.

Each week, a very special member of our class gets to visit somewhere exciting! Murphy the Monkey watches all week to see who has been working hard and trying their very best. He chooses who he would like to go home with for the weekend. Primary 1a has looked at his photo diaries from previous years - we loved hearing about his adventures with other children! We are all hoping Murphy will come home with us soon!

Calderglen trip

Despite the wet weather we enjoyed our visit to Calderglen Country Park.

We got to see lots of plants from the rainforest, some stick insects, fish and marmosets.

After lunch we went outside to see all the animals.

We liked them all, especially the birds.

Beautiful Butterflies

We have been looking at measure in maths and thought that measuring our caterpillars would be a good opportunity to practise our skills.

We worked with a partner to give our caterpillar a name then measure how long it was in centimetres. It was tricky because some of them were wriggling and were not very straight. Most measured about 4 centimetres.When they were in the chrysalis stage they had to be moved to the butterfly net.

We wrote about them in our caterpillar diaries, recording the different stages of the lifecycle.

When they emerged from the chrysalis they were very pretty but their wings were still a bit wet. We put some flowers, fruit and sugar water into the net for them.

We tried to describe what they looked like.

We released our butterfies in Robertson Park.

Some of us got to touch them as we tried to encourage them out of the net.

We will miss them in our classroom but will look out for them in the park.

Living Things

Our new topic this term is Living Things/New Life.

When we were making our learning plan for this topic, we decided that we want to learn about lots of minibeasts like caterpillars and frogs. We thought that it would be really interesting to watch the caterpillars develop into butterflies.

The caterpillars arrived and we have been having a good look at them. They are still very small but already we can see them growing.

We also wanted to plant some flowers to help us learn about what they need for healthy growth. We planted iris and cornflower bulbs and are taking care to water them and make sure that they are getting enough light. We will make some name tags to decorate our 'pots'.

We are recording what we learn about what plants need in our special booklets.

As part of our active maths we can practise our money handling skills in our garden centre role play area.

In The Jungle ~ Our Classroom

Just in case anybody missed our open evening, here are a few pictures of our classroom jungle. We worked really hard on our jungle. In these pictures you can see examples of our annotated maps and some extended writing. It took a few days to write our stories but we think they are really good. You can see our little gibbon, Gabu hanging in the canopy. He went home with a different child each night. The boys and girls were very good at giving an oral report of what Gabu had been doing when they brought him back.

Our Orangutan wall makes a lovely display for our writing about orangutans.

We had to work together to paint our orangutan but then thought he would be even better if we used wool to make him feel nice and soft. He looks good too.

Underneath the orangutan a few of our annotated diagrams of tigers are prowling. We found tigers very interesting and even wrote poems about them.

We liked using paper mache to build our peacock, then painted him. Some of his feathers are real.

Our panda gave us lots of inspiration to write the descriptive sentences which are displayed around him.

Our tree of excellence was made up of bananas that described the ways we have shown ourselves to be confident individuals, responsible citizens, effective contributors and successful learners. We discussed our learning each week before writing our bananas. We hope that you enjoy looking at our jungle as much as we have enjoyed working on it and learning about the endangered animals. In The Jungle ~ Open Evening

We were very excited about our open evening and couldn't wait to show our guests around our jungle that we built for Gabu. We had lots of activities for our guests to try out. Some were even brave enough to try the blind fruit tasting - the fruits were banana, pinapple, melon and mango.

We played our board games as one of our activities. They worked really well.

We showed our guests how to make tiger sums.

We really liked being able to show off all of our hard work.

The animal mask making activity was very popular.

There were quite a few tigers leaving the classroom before the evening was over!

We had to show our favourite activity on a graph. The mask making was the most popular.

In The Jungle ~ buddies visit

We have really enjoyed learning about the jungle and the animals that live there.We were very excited this week because we had completed our jungle for Gabu. We invited some very important people to come and see all of our fabulous work - our families!

Before our guests arrived, our Primary 7 buddies came to try out all of our activities and to look at our jungle.

We enjoyed playing the board games that we had made.

We loved our guess the animal game - our buddies were very good at this.

They had to follow our activity sheet just like our families would.

They tested our jigsaws and read through our stories.

We enjoyed showing them our work and telling them all about Gabu. They seemed to enjoy the visit too!

Special topic

Toys topic

As part of our topic, we decided to make some toys. We made paper plate masks, peg dolls, a board game and some finger puppets.

We had some time to play with the toys, then we had to evaluate them by giving two stars and a wish.

We thought that they were lots of fun to play with.

We had to think about what could make them even better. We thought that the finger puppets would be better with stick on hair like the peg dolls. The board game was really good too but could be improved by writing on where to start and finish.

Our toys were a success as we enjoyed making them and playing with them.

Good Behaviour in Primary 1

Mrs Ayres was so proud when Mrs Weiland came round on the last day of term to give out the good behaviour certificates for the term as almost everyone got one. Well done boys and girls!

Our Special Visitor

When we had our Christmas party recently with the other primary 1 children, we got to wear our own clothes to school, had dancing and games and enjoyed some healthy snacks. The most exciting bit though was when our special visitor arrived.

We were very lucky because Santa arrived with a big sack and he gave a present to each of us that we were allowed to open early. He loved our singing, especially Jingle Bells.

Santa Claus left his sleigh on the roof but a few boys and girls were quite sure they spotted it when Santa left.

Christmas Nativity

Despite losing some of our rehearsal time due to the weather, the children worked very hard and performed wonderfully in our Nativity. All of the teachers were extremely proud and the audience thoroughly enjoyed the show.

Everyone enjoyed getting into their costumes.

And looked really good in them.

It was fun working with the other classes. We like working with our friends.

We did so well remembering all of our lines and songs.

Christmas Craft

We had lots of fun making our Christmas reindeer dust to sell at the Christmas fayre. We had to stir in glitter to the special reindeer food and it was really important that we remembered to add our Christmas wish while we stirred. We decorated our gift tag and added some stickers to our jars. We think that we made a really good job of them and that the reindeer will find our houses easily on Christmas eve.

Toys

Our topic this term is toys. We will be looking at how toys have changed over the years and the materials that are used to make them.
We completed a placemat challenge in our groups to find out about our favourite toys and had to use lots of describing words. Mrs Ayres was impressed with the detail we were giving and with how well we listened to each other in our groups.

Super sounds

The children have been making very good progress with their Jolly Phonic sounds. We are now using the sounds to help us to make words. Mrs Ayres is very pleased at how well the children can help her to sound out words on the whiteboard and some children are even sounding the words out for their own writing. We are learning to write a sentence. We are usually very good at remembering our finger spaces and we know that it is very important to start with a capital letter and finish with a full stop.

Bonfire Night

We made our bonfire night pictures by drawing the fireworks with crayon, leaning really heavily, then painting the sky over the top. The fireworks shine through!

We have been working on describing words in class and Mrs Ayres was so pleased to hear all of the adjectives being used to describe fireworks.

Friendship bracelets

Our class made some lovely friendship bracelets to give to our friends in our class. We had to carefully thread the beads on, then Mrs Ayres helped us to tie them before we chose a friend to give it to. We enjoyed the activity and it was really nice when we were given one made by a friend.

Portrait painting

We painted these lovely self portraits after looking at similarities and differences. We had to think about the colours we needed if our picture was to look like us. We took great care with choosing the colour for our hair and eyebrows.

Our primary 7 buddies came to help us when we were painting our facial features. They helped us to choose the colour for our eyes, our lips and nose.

We enjoyed working on our portraits and we think that they look great out in our corridor.

Our new classroom

We were all very excited about moving to our new classroom and as you can see from the pictures, Mrs Ayres brought everything from our old room.

We are settling into our new routines really well.

Mrs Ayres has put our work up on the walls and we are very proud of it.

End of term reward

As a reward for good behaviour, not having 3 reds on the traffic lights, primary 1 enjoyed a party. We got to wear our own clothes all day, then after lunch the primary 1 classes got together for some dancing and party games.

We had some snacks and drinks to keep us going.

We liked the opportunity to celebrate with our friends from the other classes.

An ice pole was a good (and tasty) way to cool down after all that dancing.

We enjoyed playing pass the parcel.

Mrs Ayres thought we were very good at dancing.

We all had a lovely time.

Welcoming a baby

As part of our religious and moral education topic, Welcoming a baby, primary 1 went for a visit to Trinity church. Mr Steele told us about how babies are welcomed into the church and about some of the things we could see before letting us explore.

The baptismal font is very important when a baby is being christened.

We enjoyed trying out the pulpit and the lectern.

We had a good look at the communion table.

We had to be very careful climbing upstairs to the gallery but it was lots of fun and we could see most of the church from up there.

We had a lovely time and then walked back to school in the sunshine.

Gladigator

Primary 1a really enjoyed Gladigator's visit to the school. We heard all about how to keep our teeth healthy and clean.

Welcome to Primary 1a

Primary 1a have settled happily into life at Kirklandneuk primary. It has been a very busy first few weeks with so many new things to see and do. We have been having lots of fun learning about our Jolly Phonic sounds, counting and writing our numbers and making lots of new friends too! We have really enjoyed spending time getting to know our primary 7 buddies.

They visited us in class to read us stories and have a wee chat.

We showed them the sounds and numbers that we have been learning.

They even helped us when we practiced writing our names.

We always look forward to seeing them!

Our buddies were a great help on our first visit to the dinner hall.

They helped us to keep calm and showed us where to sit. They helped us to collect everything that we needed. Our buddies are very sensible and also very friendly.

It was really nice to sit together to eat our lunches.

As well as our numbers and letters, in class we have been learning about how we should behave and deciding what makes a quality line, quality worktime and a quality audience.

When we line up we can be a quality line. We know to face the front, looking where we are going. We can keep our hands at our sides so that we don't bump others and we can be very quiet like little mice. We think that this is really important when we are walking through the school because we don't need to distract other people from what they are doing and it keeps us safe because we can hear what Mrs Ayres says.

In the classroom we have quality work time. We work quietly so that we can think carefully about what we are doing.

When we are really quiet, the quiet working bears will come and sit on our table.

They remind us to work without chatting because their ears get sore if it is noisy and then they feel sad and have to go away.

We do our best work when we have quality worktime.

Class Trip - Amazonia!

As part of our topic this term, our class visited Amazonia. We had a great day visiting the 'rainforest'! Primary 1 got the chance to see lots of interesting things like butterflies (that were much bigger than the ones we had in class!), monkeys, snakes, spiders, terrapins, koi carp fish, toucans, parrots, ants, bats, ghekkos and lots of other insects.
Our guide even let us touch a snake, a tarantula spider and a ghekko! Miss McCabe said we were all very brave - she even managed to hold the spider! Primary 1 had lovely sunny weather for their trip too, and after the handling session we had the chance to play in Strathclyde Country Park.

Topic in term 4 - Living Things

The caterpillars that our class were looking after became butterflies recently! Each caterpillar came out of the chrysalis with beautiful orange and red colours on it's wings! Primary 1 are very proud that every caterpillar we had hatched safely. We had to look after the butterflies before we let them go by giving them food and creating a nice place for them to live.
It was lovely to see them being released into the environment!

Gladigator

Primary 1 were lucky enough to have another visit from Mr Gladigator this term. He visited our school to talk to us about oral health. He was very impressed with how much we knew about caring for our teeth! We had great fun talking to him and playing on his inflatable run!

Topic in term 4 - Living Things

Our new topic this term is Living Things. Mr Higgins has been helping us to learn about lots of exciting mini-beasts, insects and plants. We made a learning plan at the start of term to decide what we would learn about.
Primary 1a are looking after caterpillars in class - we hope that if we look after them carefully they will grow into butterflies. In groups, we are investigating how broad beans grow - again we hope that if we take care of them properly the plants will grow tall and strong.

Dance in term 4

Term 4 has started and already primary 1a is busy trying out new things! We have been working hard in the gym hall doing creative dance.
Mr Higgins has been teaching us all about living things and mini-beasts. We have been able to retell the life cycles of butterflies, frogs and bees through dance. Look at the pictures - Mr Higgins and Miss McCabe have been very impressed with our imaginative movements!

Primary 1a held their very first open evening this week. It was very well attended by family and friends and everyone had a great time! We entertained our guests with Scottish songs and dancing in the gym hall first, and afterwards we took them on a tour of our class!

Outdoor Learning - maths

We took our learning outdoors recently. Our class ventured out into the playground with room 2 at maths time. We played lots of games to help our counting, and we even took part in a problem solving challenge. Before we came back in, we practised our addition sums with a learning partner - by writing them on the playground! Primary 1 had lots of fun!

February is Active Month on our school's health calendar. In addition to gymnastics at our normal P.E. times, Primary 1a have had the opportunity to take part in Tai Kwon Do, table tennis, curling and aerobics. Mrs Gray organised 2 'wake up' with exercise mornings. We all took part in an aerobics session before we even came in to school! Look at the photos - our class had lots of fun!

Primary 1 are working very hard at language time! We are doing very well with our reading, trying hard to sound out words and blend sounds together. Miss McCabe says that we are also making great progress with our writing. Room 1 have been learning about capital letters and full stops. Look at our beautiful writing!

Our class has started a new and very exciting topic this term! Primary 1a are now learning all about Katie Morag and the Isle of Struay. Friends and family will be invited into our class at the end of term to look at our work - we don't want to say too much on our blog and spoil the surprise!
Look at the learning plan we made with room 2 - we are going to be very busy indeed this term! Primary 1 have also started using learning logs and we have already made annotated maps of the Isle of Struay.

End of Term Reward

Miss McCabe was very proud at the end of last term. Every single person in room 1 earned the chance to go to the end of term reward - a fantastic pantomine in the gym hall! We all behaved well and tried hard to stay on the star. Look at how many children received great behaviour certificates from Mrs Wieland!

Gladigator Visit

A special person visited primary 1 recently! Gladigator visited primary 1a and primary 1b to talk to us about oral health.
Although we brush our teeth in class everyday, Gladigator wanted to remind us why brushing our teeth is important. Gladigator showed us the correct technique for brushing.
At the end of our talk, our class got the chance to play on the bouncy runway that Gladigator had brought with him - it was fantastic fun!

Homecoming Week

Kirklandneuk Primary School celebrated Scotland's Year of Homecoming recently, and every class was involved. Primary 1a took part in Scottish food tasting and Scottish games. We also listened to Scottish stories and tried to write using Scottish words. Our class even sang Scottish songs and learned the Gaygordons - a Scottish dance! We had a great week!

Toys Topic

Primary 1 have been learning all about toys this term. We have been looking at how toys are made, where the materials come from and how they are sold.
Miss McCabe has also shown us some old fashioned toys and we have had the chance to play with toys from the past. As well as learning about toys, we have also been making toys, such as spinners and puppets!
Our class now has a toy shop that we can use at active maths time!

Eco School Work

We have had a busy time lately! Primary 1 have been helping Mrs Gray and our school's Eco-Committee by making bird feeders. It will be lovely to see all the birds visiting our playground in the coming winter months.
Our class also helped our primary 7 buddies by going with them on a litter pick in the school grounds.

Seasonal Science!

Our class took learning outside recently! Miss McCabe took primary 1 outside to learn about the seasonal changes taking place all around us.
It is Autumn, so we found lots of interesting things to look at and discuss. We were fascinated by the many different colours of leaves and the changes in the trees! Miss McCabe told us all about what happens to the environment before the winter comes.
We are going to use some of the natural objects we found to create some seasonal artwork!

New Topic

Our topic this term is Toys. Primary 1, with Miss McCabe's help, created a Learning Plan for the topic. This will help us learn about things we want to know about, as well as showing Miss McCabe what we know already.
The first task we had was to decide on our favourite toy. We had to show this as a group drawing. Our groups created a poster called a 'placemat'. We had to work as a team, listen to each other and remember our group roles. Some of our primary 7 buddies came down to give us some help.
Miss McCabe and Mrs O'Brien were very impressed with how well we worked together!

End of Term Reward

Miss McCabe was delighted recently when Mrs Weiland visited our class. Mrs Weiland presented every single person in primary 1a with an excellent bahaviour certificate for term 1. We have had no red traffic lights, and no one has been on the green more than 5 times. Miss McCabe is very proud of us!
As a reward for being so well behaved, we were all able to attend the reward disco. Our class had lots of fun!!

Visit to Trinity Church

Primary 1a and primary 1b went on a special trip to Trinity Church recently. Our R.M.E. topic this term is Welcoming a Baby. Mr Steele told us all about what a baby needs and how a baby is baptised. Our class got the chance to ask questions about how a baby is welcomed into the church.
We also got the chance to explore the church. Mr Steele was kind enough to tell us all about the pulpit, the communion table, the baptismal font and the lectern. You can see from our pictures we had a fantastic time!

Cooperative Work Group Challenge

Miss McCabe set each group in our class a Cooperative Work Challenge recently. We had to work in our groups to create a poster that would let any visitors to our class know what our group names are.
It was quite difficult for us at first, but with a little help from Miss McCabe we were able to plan and create our posters. Everyone had to listen and cooperate. We had a time keeper, a materials manager, an encourager and an aire traffic controller at each group to make sure we were kept on task. Miss McCabe was impressed at our quiet voices and helping hands!
As well as designing the poster with each group name, primary 1 also made glittery name hands.
We succeeded in our challenge - Miss McCabe has attached our posters to ribbon so that they can hang from the ceiling. Don't they look fantastic?!

Golden Time

When our class behaves well and we all stay on the Golden Star, we get Golden Time. If we have no traffic lights in the week, we get the chance to enjoy the whole half hour of Golden Time on a Friday afternoon. Primary 1a love the Golden Time games! Miss McCabe likes to see everyone enjoying Golden Time.

As part of our Maths and Language programmes, we have lots of active learning activities. We enjoy lots of different things from using the computers and the Smartboard to using multilink and playing matching games. It is a great chance for us to work with different people in the class. Miss McCabe says we work very well at active learning times!

Primary 1a First Full Day

Today was our first full day in Kirklandneuk Primary! We were excited to stay for the whole day, and it was great to see our buddies at lunchtime. Everyone in our class had a fantastic time in the dinner hall!

Starting School

Primary 1a have settled well into school life. We are all working hard and enjoying being in room 1!

In our first week, we decided that we should have a set of rules for our class. This is to make sure it is a happy and safe place to learn each day. We want to be able to work and play happily together. As well as thinking about how we work inside the class, we also thought about how we would behave outside the classroom. With Miss McCabe's help we chose our own 'quality indicators' to remind ourselves what our worktimes, listening times and lines should be like.
Everyone who visits our class comments on how good we are at listening, working quietly and playing together co-operatively!

Primary 1a have been helped to settle into school routines by our primary 7 buddies. We have enjoyed getting to know our buddies - the older children visited our class to read a story and they have also been playing games with us in the playground. When we go to the dinner hall for the first time our buddies will be on hand to give some friendly reassurance and to help out when needed.

We have been trying so hard in our last term of primary 1. Mrs Wieland visited our class with our end of term behaviour awards. Nearly everyone in our class got a special certificate which is great news!

Fairyland Open Evening

Primary 1a succeeded in their mission to help the Friendly Dragon! Fairyland has been saved!! We have worked so hard to recreate the magical land in our class - and our effort didn't go unnoticed! This week we invited our buddies, family and friends to see our hard work. Everyone that visited our class said that they could not believe how much it had been transformed! Miss McCabe is very proud of us, she says we have all tried our best and worked extremely well! What a superb way to finish primary 1 - with our open afternoon and evening! Brilliant!

Our class had a fabulous time on our class trip recently. We went to Kelburne Country Park with room 2. The weather was fantastic and we had a great day! Primary 1 got to visit the Secret Forest, we saw the house from Hansel and Gretel, Rapunzel's tower and the Giant's workshop! We took lots of photos to show the Friendly Dragon! Our class is working hard on the special mission to help all those who live in Fairyland! Miss McCabe has helped us with lots of different activities and the Friendly Dragon says we are doing well.
The Dragon sent a messenger from Fairyland to meet us. Cosmo is now our class dragon, and he is going home with one of us each day. He will eventually take his diary back to Fairyland for all the characters to read!

Surprise Topic!

This term primary 1a and primary 1b are involved in a very special topic. We have been asked to help a friendly dragon save his friends in Fairyland! We don't want to say too much at the moment about our important job, but we are really enjoying the activities and tasks we have to do!
This week, Miss McCabe changed our 'home teams'. Our class now has brand new groups, which is great because we get the chance to work with some more of our friends. In the photographs you can see us working hard together to decide on a group name, design a poster and a desk label. Each child had a role - leader, timekeeper, materials manager and facilitator. We all tried our best to cooperate and encourage! Miss McCabe says our posters look fantastic!

Diwali

This term primary 1a are learning about the Hindu festival of Diwali. Mr Morrison has told our class all about the story of Rama and Sita. We loved hearing how the monkey warrior God Hanuman helped Rama rescue Sita from the hands of evil ten headed demon Ravana. In class we looked at Diwali cards and Diva lamps, and we even got the chance to make character masks. In the pictures you can see each group working together to solve a challenge set by Mr Morrison - we had to sequence the events of the story correctly, without using a storybook!

Outdoor Games!

It was such lovely weather today Miss McCabe took our class outside in the afternoon. We got the chance to play with the parachute and take part in lots of team games. We all had a fantastic time!

Easter Bonnet Parade!

In the last week of term primary 1a took part in the school's Easter Bonnet Parade. We had to learn songs and actions as well as make a bonnet. Our friends and family came along and were treated to a 'daffodil tea' after our performance. Look at the fantastic pictures! Miss McCabe said we were absolutely fantastic on stage - she is very proud.
When primary 1 returned to class we were delighted to see that some special visitors had left a message and some gifts for us! The Easter Bunnies came to our class when we were in the hall, and they left eggs in our baskets! A brilliant end to the afternoon.

Invitation from our Buddies!

Last week our class was lucky enough to be invited to an open afternoon. Our primary 7 buddies sent our class a 'post office telegram' asking us to attend a celebration. We went along to the hall and watched primary 6 and 7 put on a play about World War 2, sing wartime songs and tell us about war events.
As if that wasn't enough, our buddies then took us up to their fantastic classroom that had been completely transformed! Primary 1 got the chance to see Blitz buildings, a 1940s kitchen and living room and an evacuation train. We loved playing the games and activities our buddies had prepared for us.
We are very proud of our buddies - primary 7 have worked very hard this term!

As term 3 comes to an end, we have finished our work on Katie Morag. Our display is now complete with our 'Struay People' and our island looks fantastic! Miss McCabe has been very impressed with our work this term and she hopes we keep it up in term 4. Primary 1a are very proud - our class looks great!

Minibeast Hunting!

Today our class went outside to hunt for minibeasts! We went to the nature garden with Richard, one of the rangers from Starling Learning. He told us all about different kinds of insects. Primary 1 got the chance to look for some minibeasts in their natural habitat - we had a great afternoon!

Spring Science!

Primary 1a have been learning all about the changes in season recently. We have looked at the signs of Spring and why the change is important for animals and plants.
We now know the 4 things a plant needs to survive - water, warmth, light and nutrients. Miss McCabe is very impressed with the plant information books we have made!
Our class has planted sunflower seeds and we are going to take very good care of them, making sure they get everything they need. Each day our groups will water the seeds and look for any changes. We are hoping the sunflowers grow big and strong - we would love to take them home!

We also tried some online science activities at http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/scienceclips/ages/5_6/growing_plants.shtml where we learned what plants needed in order to grow.

Working with Clay

As part of our Katie Morag topic, our class is busy creating a 3D model of the Isle of Struay. Today we made village houses, boats and trees from clay for our model. Miss McCabe also chose some children to create the jetty and the lighthouse on the island. Check back soon for some pictures of our finished island - it is beginning to look fantastic!

Active Maths in term 3

Our class is doing really well with our maths work this term. As well as learning about time, we have been practising counting all the way up to 100. We love active maths time - everybody works together at the different activities around the classroom.
Following work on addition, primary 1a have just started work on subtraction.

Starling Learning

Mrs Gray arranged for rangers from Starling Learning to visit our class recently. Jamie, one of the rangers, told us all about why trees and plants are important to us. Miss McCabe spoke to us about looking after the environment.
We got the chance to look at some plants we had never even heard of before, as well as smelling some seeds and leaves!
Room 1 have planted all kinds of flowers in our new garden in the infant playground. We had a lovely morning helping the rangers!

Our class has been very creative this term! As part of our Katie Morag topic, we have had the chance to make lots of attractive artwork.
Primary 1 has made pictures of the view from Katie's house on the Isle of Struay, and the trees that Katie would see in the winter.
Miss McCabe was also very impressed with our maps of the island - we had to take our time and work with our partners carefully to get the landmarks in the correct place. We made postcards to sell in our post office aswell. Look at our great wall frieze!

Room 1 have been learning all about Katie Morag recently. Katie stays on the Isle ofStruay - an island that is very different to Renfrew. Miss McCabe has been telling us all about the things we would see on Struay, and why Katie's life is so different compared to our own. Katie's mum and dad work in a post office - we have been looking at the journey of letter, and learning all about what happens in a post office. As part of this topic, we went on a science walk in the school grounds with primary 1b. In our groups we were set a challenge of finding as many things as we could that used each type of energy - it was alot harder than we thought it was going to be!
